Mayor Ed Lee held a press event in Civic Center Plaza to announce the arrival of the new community organization from the South Bay, called the Downtown Streets Team. The Civic Center CBD is working with them as they bring on more cleaning staff.

Downtown Streets Team is a Bay Area nonprofit ending homelessness and restoring dignity for homeless men and women through self-motivated work experience and case management.  Their SF launch, funded with private dollars including a commitment from Dolby, is bringing an initial team of 25 participants to clean Civic Center Plaza, Fulton Street, United Nations Plaza, and the perimeter of Bill Graham Auditorium.

The hope is that not only will this  collaboration provide a cleaner Civic Center area for everyone, but that it will also help people who need will the support and resources to try to change their lives.

Not only will this program play an integral part in helping homeless people learn soft employment skills and get off the streets, it is also forwarding an interagency, public-private effort to activate and enhance the public areas.
